Caption

Mould colony. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fungi from a mouldy pear. This mould originates as atmospheric fungal spores which settle on food, germinate and produce a mass of growth using the food as nourishment. Different types of fungi cause different moulds. The conidia (yellow) are asexual reproductive spores that bud from the end of branching hyphae (that make up the body of the fungus). Magnification: x170 when printed at 10cm wide.
