Normal (left) and mutant (right) fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The mutant fly has vestigial wings. Fruit flies have only four pairs of chromosomes and many visible traits that can be seen with low magnification, which makes them good test subjects for studies in genetics. Other factors that make them good test subjects are their ability to produce large numbers of offspring and that they are easy to move around and examine. Vestigial wings (right hand image) means the wings are stunted or did not grow at all. It is a recessive trait that is located on the vestigial gene. Magnification: x20 when printed at 10cm wide.
