Platinum crystals. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of crystals of platinum. These crystals were formed by condensing the metal from the gas phase in a high vacuum. Platinum is a precious metal, discovered in 1748 but probably known by South Americans before then. It is used in jewellery, in alloys for thermocouples and for electrical contacts. It is also used extensively as a catalyst. Magnification x40 at 35mm size.
