Caption

Pigmentation in the lower leg of a 52 year old woman, caused by recurrent phlebitis and varicose veins. Phlebitis is an inflammation of a vein that causes a painful, swollen, red and hot area on the skin. It may be caused by trauma, infection or surgery. Varicose veins are tortuous distended veins caused by defective valves in the blood vessels. Treatment includes anti-inflammatory drugs, wearing elastic support, stripping (the surgical removal of the veins), or sclerotherapy (injection with a vein-blocking irritant).
