Gateway Arch. Night-time view across the Mississippi River towards the Gateway Arch and downtown St. Louis, Missouri, USA. At 192 metres high this is the tallest monument in America and is an integral part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. Constructed from stainless steel and designed by Eero Saarinen, the arch follows the line of an inverted catenary - the curve formed by a chain or rope hanging from two fixed points. An elevator system within the arch allows access to viewing ports at the crown.
