Potassium chloride. Polarised light micrograph of crystals of potassium chloride (KCl) , also known as chloride of potash or muriate of potash, which is used in agriculture and the chemical industry. It occurs naturally as sylvite and as a constituent of carnallite, kainite, 'hard salt' and many brines. It is mainly found in sedimentary rocks but can also be formed as a sublimation product of volcanic fumes. The presence of potassium in soil promotes plant growth so this chemical is widely used in agriculture as a fertiliser. Potassium chloride is also used by the chemical industry to prepare other potassium salts. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size.
