Quartz. Polarised light micrograph of quartz crystals with vertical breaks in the structure. Quartz is a form of silica (silicon dioxide). It occurs naturally in many types of rocks and mineral veins; sand is a a form of quartz. Pure quartz is colourless, and has uses in the optical glass industry. Colours in quartz are due to mineral impurities. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
