Osteoarthritis of the shoulder. X-ray of the knee of a patient with severe osteoarthritis. The end of the humerus (upper arm bone, left) can be seen touching the clavicle (collar bone). Normally, cartilage coats the bones so that they are well lubricated rather than being in direct contact. However, in this case, the cartilage has degenerated (broken down), causing pain and stiffness of the joint.
