Ganglion cyst (lump at centre left) on a 74 year old woman's ankle. This cyst is named for its similarity to ganglion nerve clusters. The cause is unknown, but they are believed to result from overuse of a specific joint, causing the degeneration of the surrounding fibrous tissue and the development of a fluid-filled cystic structure. Treatment is by surgical removal.
