Candle flame, schlieren image. Schlieren photography is an imaging technique that is used to show changes in the density of fluids and gases such as air, caused here by the heat of the candle flame. This schlieren image of a candle flame and its thermal plume was shot using an antique 100mm f/6 Aero Tessar as the schlieren field lens. A World War II aerial camera lens, the Aero Tessar has little color correction. The result is a gentle color gradient from yellow to blue across the image.
