Caption

Deposited iodine crystals. Round-bottom flask partly coated in iodine crystals that have formed by deposition from the gas phase to the solid phase (the reverse of sublimation). Iodine at room temperature is a grey-black solid. Gentle heating below the melting point drives a solid-gas transition known as sublimation. Iodine, found in seaweed and sea water, is an essential part of the diet.
