Crystallization of benzoic acid. Purification stage of an experiment to produce benzoic acid from sodium benzoate. The benzoic acid was produced by reacting sodium benzoate with hydrochloric acid. The resulting white solid contained impurities, which are removed in a recrystallization process. The impure benzoic acid was dissolved in a beaker of water heated to near its boiling point. Pure crystals of benzoic acid (white) form as the water in the beaker slowly cools. Benzoic acid is used in the chemical industry as a precursor for the synthesis of many other organic compounds.
