Caption

Pipe smoking, schlieren image. Schlieren photography is an imaging technique that is used to show changes in the density of fluids and gases such as air, caused here by the heat of the lit pipe and the warmth of the human body. The puff of hot air and smoke from the lit pipe produce a rising mushroom-shaped plume. Weaker thermal convection is also seen from the smoker himself. The dark spot opposite the pipe and to the right is an exhaled puff of pipe smoke. Photographed at Pennsylvania State University, USA.
