Healing skin graft scar on the shin of a 65 year old man. Skin grafts are performed when a wound is too large to heal naturally. This graft was used to cover the wound left behind after excising a malignant melanoma (a type of skin cancer). The skin for grafts is generally taken from the patient themselves, to prevent rejection of the tissue by the immune system.
