Infected burn on a 73 year old woman's hand. The red area is a sign of lymphangitis, a bacterial infection of the lymphatic vessels, which carry lymphatic fluid and white blood cells around the body. Lymphagitis usually occurs when the body is overwhelmed by an infection. As well as inflammation, the patient may also have a fever, and there is a danger that the infection may spread to the bloodstream. Treatment is with antibiotics to control the infection, and anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling.
