Scar on a 64 year old woman's navel resulting from laparoscopic surgery to remove colon cancer, known as a colectomy. Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is a minimally invasive operation in which slender tubes with a camera or cutting tools attached at the ends (laparoscopes) are inserted through small incisions into the abdominal cavity. Laparoscopy is a much less traumatic alternative to opening the body up.
