Prosthetic knee joint. Profile X-ray of the prosthetic knee (white) of a 58 year old woman. The artificial joint consists of one component attached to the femur (thigh bone, top) and the other component attached to the tibia (shin bone, bottom centre). This is a hinge joint that also allows a degree of rotation, imitating the mobility of the natural joint. Prosthetic knee joints usually replace joints that have become stiff and painful as a result of arthritis or injury, dramatically improving joint mobility. The artificial components can, however, loosen with time.
