Sample of basalt. Basalt is an extrusive (volcanic) igneous rock composed of calcic plagioclase feldspar, pyroxine, and occasionally olivine. Accessory minerals are sometimes visible. Igneous rocks are formed by magma (molten rock) being cooled and becoming solid. Basalt has an aphanitic (microcrystalline) texture - it's mineral grains are too small to be seen by the naked eye.
