Sample of clay. Clay is a naturally occurring material composed primarily of fine-grained minerals (phyllosilicate minerals). The plasticity of clay is due to these minerals and variable amounts of water trapped in the mineral structure by polar attraction. Clay can be hardened when dried or fired (baked).
