Mumps. Swollen gland (right) of a 2 year old boy with mumps parotitis, a viral infection of the parotid salivary gland (located beneath the ear). Mumps is most common in children and young teenagers, but the advent of the MMR vaccine has greatly reduced its incidence. This child did not have the vaccine, so has developed the symptoms. These begin with fever, headache and earache, followed by tenderness and swelling of the glands. Complications of mumps include meningitis, encephalitis (brain swelling), swelling of the testes or ovaries, and deafness. Treatment is with fever-reducing and anti-inflammatory drugs.
