San Andreas Fault earthquake scenario, ground shaking simulation. This simulation shows a map view at left and a perspective view around Ventura at right. The simulation shows the predicted effect of a powerful earthquake of moment magnitude 7.8 on the San Andreas Fault (red line) in southern California, USA. The epicentre is on the edge of the Salton Sea (lower left). The simulation models the maximum peak intensity of ground shaking, with the colours darkening to red as the shaking intensifies. The shaking spreads as seismic waves radiate away from the rupturing fault line over a rupture distance of 300 kilometres. The colour scale runs from I to IX (scale at top right). This simulation is 180 seconds long.
