Caption

Migraine mechanisms. Artwork showing the blood vessel and brain mechanisms thought to cause some types of migraines. It is thought that the trigger is nitric oxide (NO, orange stars) released by macrophage cells. This affects the blood vessels (red) surrounding the skull and brain, sending nerve signals down the trigeminal nerve (green). This signal travels to the thalamus, a structure deep inside the brain (upper centre), triggering the severe pain of a migraine (yellow arrow).
