Cancerous stem cells. Artwork showing the development of as stem cell turned cancerous by a carcinogenic, or toxic substance (yellow warning symbol). The process of forming a new stem cell (upper right) is shown, though the new stem cell is abnormal. The stem cell can also developing into a specialised cell in one of two ways (downward sequences). The route at left shows aneuploidy, the formation of an abnormal number of chromosomes. The route at right shows mutation, where the genetic content of one or more chromosomes is altered. The result, in both cases, is a cancerous tumour (bottom).
