Medium carbon steel. Light micrograph of a thin section of normalised medium carbon steel. This sample contains 0.3% carbon by weight alloyed with iron. Normalising is a process that toughens steel by gradually heating and cooling it. It also modifies and refines the grain structure of the metal. Medium carbon steel is used for machinery components and pipelines.
