Caption

Maria Mitchell (1818-1889), US astronomer. Mitchell's interest in astronomy began in childhood, learning to use her father's telescope. In 1847, she discovered a comet (Comet 1847 VI) and became famous as only the second woman to do so. She was the first woman member of several US science academies. In 1865, she became professor of astronomy at Vassar College, New York State, USA. A crater on the Moon, an observatory, and a science association, are named in her honour.
