Iliazarov operation, after treatment. Patient with a shortened leg after treatment using the technique developed by the Soviet orthopaedic surgeon Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov (1921-1992). Ilizarov is most famous for inventing the Iliazarov apparatus, used to carry out lengthenings of leg and arm bones. The apparatus holds the bones in place as they heal, pulling them apart at a rate of around a millimetre a day. Photographed in 1973, at the Kurgan Orthopaedy and Traumatology Research and Development Institute, Kurgan, Russia.
