Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve (1793-1864), German-born Russian astronomer. Known in Russia as Vasily Struve, he published Micrometria Mensurae (1837), a major catalogue of double stars. The same year he measured the apparent angular movement (parallax) of the star Vega, being one of the first astronomers to succeed in making such an observation. From 1835 to 1839, Struve supervised the building of the observatory at Pulkova, considered the finest in the world at the time.
