Old Red Sandstone landscape, illustration. Old Red Sandstone (ORS) is a type of rock found across the North Atlantic coasts and regions, including the UK, Ireland, Norway and north-eastern North America. The rocks tend to be red sandstones, deposited during the Devonian (420 to 360 million years ago). Many fossils are found within these rocks. This landscape shows part of what is now Scotland during the Devonian (about 410 million years ago) when it was near the equator, with the Caledonian Mountains in the background. It was a dry region with low plants along marginal areas.
