Caption

Bacteriophage alpha 3 virion, molecular model. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. Bacteriophage alpha 3 has a capsid consisting of 60 coat proteins (green) and 12 pentameric (5-subunit) spike proteins (red). The spikes allow the virus to recognise and bind to host cells. The virus carries its genetic material in single-stranded DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) form.
