Swine flu testing of piglet. Medical researchers collecting a nasal swab from a piglet (Sus scrofa domesticus) to test for novel H1N1 (swine flu) influenza virus. Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses. This H1N1 strain is able to spread from human to human, and was declared a pandemic on 11 June 2009. Symptoms are similar to those of regular human flu. This research is being carried out by veterinary medical officers from the US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS).
