These cells were isolated from human embryonic kidneys in 1977 and have been growing in culture ever since. DNA into them and to use the cells to make large amounts of protein, or even infectious viruses. This makes these cells an extraordinarily valuable tool in medicine and research. People performing gene therapy use 293T to make very high doses of virus containing therapeutic genes and these are the only cells that can do this. Magnification x 3000 when printed at 10cm wide.
