Caption

Fern spore capsule, polarised light micrograph. Transverse section through the spororocarp (spore capsule) of the water fern pillwort (Pilularia globulifera). The capsule wall (yellow and green) surounds four cavities which contain either sporangia containing microspores (small and round), or sporangia containing macrospores (large brownish-black). The sporocarp eventually cracks open and a jelly containing the two types of spores ooze out. Magnification: x45 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
