Leaf infected with rust fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of rust fungus spores (reproductive cells) inside galls on a soya (Glycine max) leaf. A gall is formed when the spores are produced inside the leaf and then rupture through the surface to infect more leaves and plants. This fungus is an important disease in cereal crops and other commercially grown plants because it severely restricts plant growth, reducing the yield. Magnification: x170 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
