SEM specimen coating equipment. Sputter- and carbon-coater for scanning electron microscope (SEM) specimen preparation. Scanning electron microscopes use electrons to view objects at magnifications much higher than can be obtained using light waves. The object being scanned needs to be able to conduct electricity, and so it is coated in a suitable material, often a metal such as gold, but here carbon is being used. Photographed in Plymouth, UK.
