Caption

Leaf glands. Animated coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of gland hairs (brown) on the leaf of a Pelargonium ignescens plant. Small thorns (grey) are also seen. The gland hairs produce a highly aromatic oil which acts as a deterrent to predatory insects. Also seen on the leaf's surface are stomata (seen at the start of the clip), small openings which regulate gas exchange between the leaf's interior and the atmosphere. Pelargoniums are popular ornamental plants due to their fragrant leaves and bright showy flowers.
