Breast reconstruction surgery. Post-operative view of the breasts of a 47-year-old woman who has had surgery to excise breast cancer. The operation was a mastectomy (breast removal) followed by reconstruction of the breast using a DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap. This flap of tissue (skin, fat and blood vessels) is taken from the lower abdomen (scars shown in C038/2325 and C038/2326) and attached to the mastectomy site to reconstruct the shape and appearance of the excised breast.
