Mitral valve replacement. Post-operative X-ray of a frontal view of the chest of a patient who has had mitral valve replacement surgery. The mitral valve regulates the flow of blood between two of the heart's chambers, the left ventricle and the left atrium. The heart is the white mass at centre, between the two lungs. The replacement valve (just below centre) is not clearly seen here. The wires (white loops) holding the sternum (breastbone) together after the open-heart surgery are seen down centre. For a clearer view of the replacement valve, see image C038/2446.
