Caption

Root tip meristem cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a root tip meristem cell. The cells of the meristem in a plant root (root apical meristem, RAM) are totally undifferentiated and are therefore similar to stem cells in animals. Meristem cells can become epidermis, xylem and phloem, and pith. This specimen is from a thale cress plant (Arabidopsis thaliana). Magnification: x30,000 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
