Several polished slabs of malachite joined together to form a mosaic of this mineral so renowned for its vivid green colours and banded, kidney-like structures. The mineral malachite is a hydrated form of copper carbonate. Most malachite of attractive decorative quality, like worked in this mosaic, comes from the Congolese copper-mining province Shaba. Although closely associated with the copper ore, malachite is not an ore in its own right and mostly seen worked into trinkets and other ornamental objects of small to larger size, like bowls and table tops. Actual size of this slab is 24 x 29 cm.
