Caption

Midge eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of numerous lenses, called ommatidia, that make up the compound eye of a midge (Suborder Nematocera). A compound eye is not very good at distinguishing detail, but it does enable the detection of tiny movements.
