In order for the female reproductive system to produce offspring, the body must produce gametes and prepare to nurture a developing embryo for 9 months. The primary reproductive organs of the female are the ovaries which create and nurture gametes and produce the female sex hormones, estrogens and progesterone. Accessory structures serve the needs of the reproductive cells and the developing foetus. These structures include the uterine tubes, uterus and vagina and make up the internal genitalia.
