The main duties of the digestive system are to breakdown food mechanically and chemically so the body can absorb nutrients. The digestive system is primarily composed of the alimentary canal, which is simply a long series of tubes starting with the mouth and ending with the rectum and anus. This canal is made up of the oral cavity, oesophagus, stomach, small intestines (duodenum, jejunum, & ileum), and the large intestines. The large intestine is subdivided into the cecum, appendix, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, and anal canal.
