Gross specimen of human kidneys At centre is the abdominal aorta, which is joined to the kidneys via the renal arteries. The tubes between the kidneys and the ruler are the ureters, which carry urine to the bladder. The kidney at right shows a severe atrophy (wasting) and a lobulated surface, suggesting the presence of large abscesses inside.
