Odontomachus (bear trap) ant on a leaf, coloured environmental scanning electron micrograph (ESEM). The compound eyes (blue) are either side of the head. The two antennae protrude to upper right and upper left. The powerful mandibles (biting mouthparts) are here in their open position, with one at right and the other at left. Below the head are the ant's legs and thorax. Ants are social insects that live in colonies that can contain millions of individuals. They are found worldwide in a diverse range of habitats.
