Glycine crystals. Polarized light micrograph of crystals of glycine, the simplest of the amino acids. Glycine is a neurotransmitter. It is important in the metabolism as it contributes carbon atoms in the formation of blood pigments. Glycine is also used in the synthesis of adenine and guanine, two of the nucleotides used to form the nucleic acids DNA and RNA. Field of view size: 0.30 x 0.45 millimetres.
