Urticaria (also called hives or nettle rash) affecting the back of a 1-year-old boy. The inflammation develops as an allergic reaction which ranges in size from small spots to patches several inches across; it is intensely itchy and lasts anything from a few hours to several days. The cause is a sensitivity to certain foods, insect bites, medication or other substances.
