Lichen planus. Close-up of lesions in cutaneous lichen planus on the back of a 25-year-old female patient. Lichen planus is a disease of the skin and mucous membranes. It has no obvious cause, but may be of autoimmune origin. In some cases it may be triggered by stress, and in others by an allergic reaction to drugs or other substances. Treatment is with topical corticosteroids and with antihistamines to reduce itching. Most cases of lichen planus disappear within two years.
