Alzheimer's disease. Coloured sagittal positron emission tomography (PET) scan of the brain of a 74-year-old male patient with Alzheimer's disease (top) compared with a normal brain (bottom). The colour-coded scan shows metabolic activity from low (blue) to high (red, pink and white). PET scanning utilises an injected radioactive tracer to reveal variations in metabolic activity in the brain. This patient's brain shows diffuse hypometabolism in the right temporal cortex. The normal scan reveals a more consistent pattern of high activity across the cerebral hemisphere. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia.
