Pneumonia. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan through the lungs (dark blue) of a 51-year-old man, showing segmental pneumonia in the lower lobe of the left lung (lower right). Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by infection with bacteria or other microorganisms. The alveoli (the air sacs of the lungs) become blocked with pus and solidify. The solid areas are visible on X-rays and CT scans. Symptoms are coughing and chest pain.
