Oesophagitis. Endoscopic view of oesophagitis with ulceration (left and right). Oesophagitis is inflammation of the oesophagus. The most common cause is chronic acid reflux, when acid escapes from the stomach into the oesophagus. The acid damages the cells lining the wall of the oesophagus, causing inflammation and ulceration. Treatment for acid reflux is with drugs to reduce stomach acid production.
